The Colusa
County Harvest Renaissance Faire is an
opportunity for the citizens of Colusa
County and surrounding areas to sell their
locally made products and to promote local
services. It is scheduled for October
23-24, 2010 at the Colusa County
Fairgrounds, and is set in the court of
Isabella and Ferdinand of Spain
(1474-1516). This event will allow
residents the opportunity and the venue to
participate in Colusa County’s Renaissance.
Colusa County shares latitude with both
Spain and Portugal. Because of the shared
latitude, many of the same agricultural
products and value added agricultural
products were available historically. Rice,
olives, mushrooms, beans, vine crops,
grains, fruits and vegetables were all
staples of the late 15th and
early 16th centuries. They
produced wine from locally grown grapes,
made bread from locally grown and ground
grains, and cheeses from locally produced
milk. All soap, perfume and medications
were made at home, using locally produced
products. Traditionally, sheep, goats,
chickens and pigs were kept domestically.
Game birds, venison and wild boar were
hunted to supplement the table. All of
those products are still available here in
Colusa County. Here, they are fresh and our
local producers know how those products are
best featured. By adding the historical
element, CFCC hopes to attract visitors from
other areas to the faire, thus creating an
expanded customer base. If successful, this
will become an annual event, thus creating a
sustainable market for those goods and
services. If you would like more
